Ever wanted to travel to the moon?
Well, if you are willing to compromise, there is a faster and slightly more accessible option right here on Earth. The moon-like beach Sarakiniko finds itself on the Greek remote island Milos and it looks simply fantastic. The pale rounded cliffs and the white sands create the illusion of a surreal landscape, just perfect for exploration.
The beach is unique in the world and its celestial beauty is a result of all the natural elements working together. First, volcano ashes and lava hardened and turned into rock formations at the contact with water. The formations were largely emplaced in a shallow marine environment. While under the water, the salty waves were eroding and smoothening them and marine fossils were forming. The bone-white volcanic rocks have gradually uplifted and today, the Northern wind continues to caringly and softly shape them.
If you will explore the entire coastline among Sarakiniko Beach, be sure to discover mesmerizing places. From caves and rockpools to abandoned mining tunnels and white chalked cliffs perfect for jumping in the water. Be sure not to miss the cenote, it features a natural arch and a little blue lagoon.
With these spectacular views, you’d probably expect lots of tourists buzzing around the beach but it is not the case. In fact, the Milos island is much less touristic than Santorini and has maintained a lot of its natural charm. If you are traveling off-season and you are an early bird, you might find the beach even completely empty at times.
How to get there?
Milos is the southwesternmost island in the Cyclades group and one of the most beautiful Aegean island. It is quite easy to reach, having an airport with daily flight connections to Athens. Anyhow, if you feel like swinging on the waves of the Mediterranean Sea, you can hop on one of the regular ferry trips from Athen’s Piraeus Port. It lasts from 4 to 8 hours, depending on whether you are traveling by a high-speed or a regular ferry. You can get to Milos by ferry also from other mainland ports or neighboring islands.
Sarakininko can be found on the northern coastline on Milos island which is a short ten-minute drive from the harbourside town of Adamas or fifteen-minutes drive from the island’s capital city, Plaka. Once you arrive in Milos, our advice is to rent a scooter, ATV or a car for the day and drive your way to the beach. You will see there will be many rental options. As it is a remote beach, no buses are going directly to Sarakininko, but you can easily find tourist boats going there.

There are options for all pockets on the island – from luxury resorts to Airbnb, hostels and camping sites. You just have to pick what best suits you.
