Wondering what’s in store for your upcoming Mykonos holidays? Bohemian Cycladic architecture, beautiful beaches and a Greek atmosphere all add to the charm of this beautiful island. In this post we will focus on the best beach in Mykonos according to travelers worldwide: Platis Gialos Beach.

#How to get there:

Platis Gialos Beach is located 4 kilometers away from Mykonos Town (Chora), in the south part of the island. Getting from the city to the beach is possible by either renting a car or taking a local bus. You can catch a bus from the station located on the road with the windmills. During high season, the buses are usually full, so our suggestion is that you travel a bit outside the crowded months of July and August.

The fastest way to get to Mykonos Island is to fly from Athenes (there are regular summer flights that last around 35 minutes). You can grab a ferry from Athenes; during the summer season, there are several ferries departing from both Piraeus and Rafina port. Our recommendation: try Blues Star Ferry, which offers a good value for money.

# Where to Stay: Mykonos Town (Chora) or Beach Hotels

Mykonos Town or Chora is your best choice of accommodation if you are planning on spending some time at Platis Gialos Beach. Some of the advantages of ‘setting base’ in Mykonos Town include easy access to all of the nearby beaches, as well as to nearby restaurants around the clock. Chora (also known as Hora) is a labyrinth of narrow streets with cobblestone pavement, beautiful Cycladic houses and picturesque stores and boutiques.

When in Mykonos Town, be sure not to miss out on visiting Little Venice, a very special neighborhood, located just minutes walking from Fabrika central bus station. With whitewashed houses standing on the edge of the sea, bohemian restaurants and memorable sunsets, this is the picture-perfect image you will have…outside the tourist season. During the summer months, the many cruise ships and buses make the place extremely crowded.

There are a number of accommodation options in Mykonos town, suitable for either families, couples or groups of friends. In search for the best Mykonos beach hotel, consider the options outside the island capital.

#Platis Gialos Beach

Platis Gialos is a lovely bay, with a sandy beach mixed with tiny pebbles (do remember to bring water sandals). Depending on the season, the beach is either crowded and filled with lounge chairs, or more breathable (during late September/early October). Renting a lounge chair will take you down around $10-30.

Some of the perks of Platis Gialos include:

  • proximity to Mykonos town and the possibility to hike into town (the terrain is hilly, but beautiful)
  • boats that will take you to other beaches in minutes (Paradise beach and Super Paradise beach are within easy reach)
  • you can also reach Paranga Beach and Paradise Beach by hiking
  • an impressive food variety, amazing seafood and mid-range prices
  • crystal clear water
  • water sports, scuba diving and snorkeling
