Imagine taking your bike for a ride in a warm summer evening and suddenly entering a dream zone. Thousands of small sparkling lights riding along with you, as you go deeper and deeper down this magical lane. This glow-in-the-dark bicycle track has recently been opened in Nuenen, east of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Designed by Daan Roosegaarde and constructed by Heijmans, the twinkling path forms part of the Van Gogh cycle route in the Dutch province of Brabant.

The opening of the cycle path marks the start of the Van Gogh 2015 international theme year and is inspired by Van Gogh painting “Starry Night“. The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde cycle path is illuminated by both special paint that charges in daylight and embedded LEDs that are powered by a nearby solar power system. The path is one-kilometer-long and is said to light up no matter what the weather conditions: “”It’s a new total system that is self-sufficient and practical, and just incredibly poetic,” explained Roosegaarde.
