Construction of the town and castle began in the late 13th century near Vltava River, which was an important element among the trade routes in Bohemia. The main attraction of this beautiful medieval town is the Český Krumlov Castle, an original Gothic structure founded by the Lords of Krumlov in 1250 and considered the second largest castle in Czech Republic, after the Hradčany castle complex of Prague. A large garden and an extensive bridge over a deep gap are the main attraction spots inside the castle.

A unique cultural heritage is represented by the Baroque theater (completed in 1766), with original stage machinery, scenery and props:, one of only a few such court theaters that still exists. Due to its age, the theater is only used three times a year (only two are open to the public), when a Baroque opera is performed in simulated candlelight. Another architectural attraction is Church of St. Vitus, a Gothic church dating back to the 15th century with frescoes from the same period.

Český Krumlov is known as an important cultural center, hosting festivals and other events every year. The most popular of them all, is the Five-Petalled Rose Festival, which is celebrated on the weekend of summer solstice in June. During the festival , the downtown area becomes a medieval scene with craftsmen, artists, musicians, and local people dressed in costumes from the Middle Ages. There are also summer music festivals in Český Krumlov, and the most important is the International Music Festival, which includes varied musical genres such as blues, rock or soul.
